funky does Kylie: "DISCO" (2020)

Not that I've ever seen any because I'm always having lots of real sex and never sit at home wanking, obviously.

Hurt that "Illusion" got such a mediocre rating from @funky but pleased he wasn't totally dismissive of Aphrodite. The title track is indeed phenomenal.

And yeah "Heartstrings" would have been top 3 for me on the album had it made it. "Mighty Rivers" isn't bad either.

Kiss Me Once is more of an X style hodgepodge without the incredible highs. "Feels so Good" is my only 10. But then there is "Sleeping with the Enemy"

Kiss Me Once contains one of the most maligned Kylie songs of all time but one that I personally adore so there is that.

@funky you should do a side react to The Abbey Road Sessions.

OMG me too :disco:

And YES to an Abbey Road detour, I think it would definitely have merit for this journey.

I low key HATE the Kiss Me Once album. :D Faceless, joyless, directionless, generic rubbish for the most part.

The title track, I Was Gonna Cancel and Sleeping With the Enemy are the only ones I'd save from a fire. Maybe Les Sex, but it's very much overrated for having one mildly amusing lyric and not much else.

I'm not sure if you know about it @funky, but in 2012 Kylie celebrated 25 years in the industry with various events including the Anti-Tour (you'll have heard about THAT in this thread :tongueout:) as well as the Abbey Road Sessions album, where she rerecorded a selection of her hits with a live band or orchestra (depending on the song). Here's a sample:

I mean he might! I think it might be a little bit too pop/dance music OF THAT ERA though :D

Oh I just remember people quoting that les leg line a lot when the album came out. I certainly don't think it's some BRILLIANT JOKE.

It's one of those lines I always think I need to Google to work out what it actually is as I never thought LES LEG could be right. But I seem to have forgotten every time over the last 8 years

As disastrous of a single choice as it was, I Was Gonna Cancel has aged shockingly well for me though. It's just so fun!

The mental image of Jasmine Masters from Drag Race doing half-hearted calisthenics to it while wearing a ridiculous drawn-on beard has become completely inextricable from the song in my head. :D

Given all the hate it gets, Kiss Me Once as a whole is definitely my guilty pleasure in terms of Kylie albums.

Just so you know @funky, Sia was responsible for overseeing the record and since you're a fan of Haim you might like If Only which is an Ariel Rechtshaid track and is absolutely one of my favourites on it.

I draw a tenuous link between If Only, Lost Without You and Say Something. [To me] they are all of the same ilk with their vaguely 80s inspired sound.

Yes i think I definitely need to do TARS. How did that even pass me by? Or did I just forget all about it? Kylie was clearly very low on my radar between X and DISCO.

Iconic on so many levels :disco:

I wouldn't even say it's a guilty pleasure for me. I actually prefer it to Golden, Aphrodite and, well, probably even Disco.

I much prefer Nerina's version of Better Than Today. The song just landed like a lead balloon as a single. And then we had this frankly cringeworthy performance of it:

I've always struggled with Kylie irrespective of whether she's playing it safe or trying to cover a lot of bases in one album release. I do recall enjoying the 'Aphrodite' album more than any of the others in this particular phase of her career. The title track is in my all-time top ten Kylie songs. I usually play it before or immediately after the album version of 'Shocked'. Sometimes both.

This is my big takeaway from the whole project. She really is a singles artist. So many great tracks over the years but she doesn’t seem to have one Ray Of Light or Like A Prayer, or even an Erotica - something that has a distinct mood that you can listen to from start to finish without any bumps or diversions.

I almost totally agree. I have to give her 'Fever'. I can listen to that end-to-end without skipping and have even been known to press the repeat button when it's finished.

Talking of repeating Kylie, I could play 'Dreams' from 'Impossible Princess' on a repetitive loop and NEVER get bored of it.

Singles act is harsh. I don’t think she’s ever delivered an all-time classic album either, but her career is littered with absolute gems that were left as album tracks or B-sides.

Love you VoR but your second sentence is basically just agreeing with what I said :D

Come on now Funky. A Madonna comparison? In 2022? Really?!
