Yes, this feels simultaneously pleasing and bleak, somehow. When you think of the strides that have been made in representation in terms of diversity in other areas, it really does make you want to check what year we're currently living in.How depressing that this is a milestone in 2022. Football feels like it's about a decade and a half behind the rest of culture in a lot of ways.

In many ways though, I think it taking so long but then only happening with a 17 year old is weirdly a sign that the progress has still been happening, just behind the scenes? Like it feels like this is a 'it's happening now because there literally is almost zero consequence for it by this point' stage, just none of the Premier League lot really wanted to test to thesis. How depressing that this is a milestone in 2022. Every professional club now has an engaged LGBTQ group. I went to an under 18s game at Old Trafford the other week and there was a rainbow banner. British football has made big efforts to become more inclusive, yes there is still a minor element of idiots, but you get that in any sport. In many ways though, I think it taking so long but then only happening with a 17 year old is weirdly a sign that the progress has still been happening, just behind the scenes? It’s changed, yes, but he’s still absolutely going to be on the receiving end of homophobic chanting from the bellends who haven’t changed next season.Ive been going to Football for the past 30 years, its changed massively. I would say this is more indicative of tabloid culture.
I guess what will be interesting is how clubs respond to that. It’s changed, yes, but he’s still absolutely going to be on the receiving end of homophobic chanting from the bellends who haven’t changed next season.
I would hope and expect the cubs to condemn it and threaten lifetime bans for anyone identified. Football has changed enough for anyone who cares about their reputation not to want to be seen as homophobic, but there’s still a sizeable rump who don’t care about their reputation. Just look at how often there are reports of racist abuse, and that’s been perceived as unacceptable within the game for much longer than homophobia.I guess what will be interesting is how clubs respond to that.
Lifetime bans for those that do, same as with racismIt’s changed, yes, but he’s still absolutely going to be on the receiving end of homophobic chanting from the bellends who haven’t changed next season.
Shame Facebook isn't so accommodating.Just been on Twitter and seeing nothing but love. Even from Millwall fans.
So many basic straights saying why does it matter, it's his business and he didn't need to share it...Shame Facebook isn't so accommodating.
