UK Charts / Midweeks 2022

The Fizz's strategy of only selling the physical and download of their new album through their own website and it not being on streaming at all didn't work out too well...

It may have benefitted them financially tho'. Radiohead's most profitable albums were "In Rainbows" and, one of their lowest sellers, "The King Of Limbs" because they handled the initial release through their own channels only. Streaming has absolutely crashed income for bands and artists and directing people away from it is financially viable for any act who wouldn't expect to be in the charts anyway.

I suspect Radiohead just may have shifted significantly more though.

The Fizz managed #25 and #29 with their last two studio albums, and the amount of streaming would be negligible.

This time around they have failed to chart even in the sales chart.

Ooh, that is a bit messy. And I see one of them was issued after Jay Aston stood for UKIP so it's not that.

I think there is something wider going on. The album was 'coming soon' for months, but then suddenly got a date no more than three weeks before it dropped. There has been no single release, no video, and no promo, until an interview with Retro Pop in the week of release.

I'll always be curious in new material for old times sake, but thankfully the last album was a bit of a turd, so I didn't buy it. And I have no intention of buying the current one, from whatever source. I would have streamed it though, even with Herr Aston's political leanings.

I guess they will keep a little more cash if they are only selling it via their website than via amazon or HMV or wherever, but it can't be much. Particularly when I suspect they haven't hit four figures.

The fact that the vinyl is still 'coming soon' without even a pre-order link, and that the webstore is a different site than their usual webstore (which is still active) makes me think something is afoot. I don't understand how they (and a lot of other heritage acts) make money any more. In their case they aren't even touring other than Butlin's weekender type gigs. Or gigs in Cheryl Baker's garden.

Robbie's new album drops from No.1 to No.38 in the latest midweeks. Oops!

He wasn't no 1 in the midweeks. The top 5 midweek was:

1 BLACKPINK - BORN PINK (16,554) *
2 Rina Sawayama - Hold the Girl (11,275) *
3 Suede - Autofiction (11,197) *
4 Marcus Mumford - (self-titled) (9,582) *
5 Pink Floyd - Animals (6,326) ^

As Taylor Swift and Arctic Monkeys go head to head in this week’s albums race, three tracks from Taylor’s Midnights dominate today’s Official Chart First Look.

Midnights' self-referential lead single Anti-Hero is leading the charge to become Taylor’s second UK Number 1 single. It would be Tay's first chart-topper in half a decade, since the incendiary Look What You Made Me Do in 2017.

Prior to Midnights release, Taylor had previously shared how Anti-Hero has become one of her favourite songs she has ever recorded. The sprightly synth-pop tune, co-produced and co-written with Jack Antonoff, sees Taylor examine her relationship to her celebrity, and how fame has isolated her from her closest relationships.

Not far behind, album opener Lavender Haze (2) and Lana Del Rey collaboration Snow On The Beach (3) complete the Top 3.

Snow On The Beach would also see alt-pop goddess Lana Del Rey secure her fifth UK Top 10 single, her first since 2019 mega meet-up Don't Call Me Angel with Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus, which peaked at Number 2.

Arctic Monkeys are very big business - all of their previous albums have gone in at #1 and they've sold out a massive stadium tour for next year, including 3 nights at the Emirates in London. They are not to be underestimated. Especially on vinyl, of which they were selling lots before it was fashionable again.

Yes but surely Taylor Swift's streaming numbers are much bigger. And her sales will be bigger too.
I suspect it won't be that close.

Swift's done 9 formats to AM's 3 (4?).

Wrong - AM have 4 vinyls as well - they also have a cassette, as does Swift so I think Swift has 10 physical formats in total to AM's 6.

The fact that no sales figure is mentioned in that story makes me think she's running away with it.

I’d say it’ll be closer than people think. Her albums tend to do about 60-70k or so normally don’t they? I’d say this will be bigger, but physicals do tend to be the main factor in the UK even with great streaming, and I’d say AM still will manage to possibly outdo her on that front, plus they have good streaming, too.

If you look at just the most recent release, ’Evermore’ did 72,000 in its first week whereas ‘Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino’ did 86,000.

I thought it would be close, probably narrowly on her favour. I just find it odd that no figures are quoted in that initial story, because we all know how the OCC would love to make a huge story out of it.

AM opened with 86k of their last album. Couldn't quickly find what Swift did.

And there we are.

Not so sure, she doesn't even need that many fans, just hardcore ones that buy all the formats :eyes:

Are all those physicals released in the UK?
Yes except for the Target editions
And her loon fanbase tends to buy all the formats religiously
Every time I'm queuing at an RSD I am always pleasantly surprised to see young people and they almost always are there for the TS record...

The Lavender versions are HMV exclusive in the UK - the deluxe CD with the bonus tracks is sold out on their website.

Actually just seen that the Lavender versions are on her website so not exclusive to HMV.

Just one additional track (Hits Different) and two alternative versions.

Evermore was released without physicals though. I think it will be somewhat close, but Taylor will take it.

I imagine the loons who buy more than four formats (which AM has as well) are infinitesimal... I hope so anyway :D

Amazed this will only her 2nd no.1 single.
Probably fair to say she'd have more if it wasn't for her UK breakthrough coming in the era when single releases were stll being held back to maximise first week sales. US artists used to tend to release globally on day 1 in the itunes era, making it harder to debut at number 1 in the Uk. She was lesser known here around the Red era, so the hits took longer to breakthrough. I expect the sales are far higher than some of the number 1s of that era, possibly for the 1989 hits too.
