UK Charts/ Midweeks 2023

They are high.

Flowers continues to blossom atop the singles chart for Miley Cyrus, increasing consumption by 32.07% to 121,151 units (12,010 downloads, 109,141 sales-equivalent streams) on its second week at No.1. Her only previous No.1s – 2013’s We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball – each spent only one week at the summit.

Bringing to an end a run of seven straight weeks in which leadership of the chart has changed hands, Flowers has the highest consumption of any track since LadBaby’s Sausage Rolls For Everyone sold 163,445 copies on debut 56 weeks ago, and is the first to record a six-figure sale since then. Flowers’ first two weeks' tally of 212,882 is the highest since Adele’s Easy On Me racked up 320,411 sales in its initial fortnight in October 2021. Easy On Me’s second week contributed 103,194 to that total, so Flowers has the highest sale for a single on its second week at No.1 since Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You (139,595), six years ago this very week.

Yeah great sales, and she’s still clearing a million a day on Spotify. Those are high downloads too, 12k is a very solid number in a week these days. This is going to be a huge seller overall, quite possibly #1 of the year (given how hard it is for songs released in the second half of the year to catch up to those that have a full year of streaming).

The fact that Lewis Capaldi's Pointless went from 15 to 1, then fell to 12, then 13 and now back up to 12 this week really gives a good indication of where he would have ended up without that week of 99p singles, doesn't it?

I obviously embrace streaming on the singles charts but it does feel redundant on the albums chart unless the entire album is being streamed. Is ANYONE consciously listening to a Weeknd greatest hits or are just various people streaming Weeknd singles because they are heavily playlisted and individually popular?

Yeah great sales, and she’s still clearing a million a day on Spotify. Those are high downloads too, 12k is a very solid number in a week these days. This is going to be a huge seller overall, quite possibly #1 of the year (given how hard it is for songs released in the second half of the year to catch up to those that have a full year of streaming).
It's interesting comparing Flowers to As It Was last year. That cleared 1.57m units in 2022 from an April release date. It had sales of 94k, 70k and 65k in its first three weeks. Flowers has had 92k, 121k and 106k and was released three months earlier in the year.

It seems ridiculous to say, but it's hard to see past anything else this year overtaking her, unless numbers drop dramatically, which seems unlikely as they don't tend to any more for streaming hits at least. It's not like the old days when the label would be deleting Flowers in March to allow the album and other singles to breathe, and singles sold very little once they fell out of the upper reaches of the chart.

Anything which overtakes it is almost certainly going to have to be a properly huge song, and it will need to be released fairly soon to get over Miley's headstart on the year. Or I guess be a song from last year which refuses to die, like Sheeran last year.

Other than As It Was, the only other song in the Top 10 of last year to actually be released in 2022 was Afraid To Feel by LF System. Although that includes Running Up That Hill, which despite being the oldest song was arguably the newest hit of the lot.

Surely Shania is much more front loaded than RAYE. Would like Shania to get the #1 though.

Gap between Shania and RAYE has closed from 3.7k to 2.6k in the latest midweeks. Looks like it will be close.

She’s had a #1 single and now at least a #2 album, I’m sure she’s over the moon as it is.
