@POP! can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think an old song has to be in the top 50 to reenterBeyoncé would have peaked this week without Christmas songs
Weird how there’s this cluster at the top of the pile and then NO Christmas songs in the bottom half - does Billboard have a limit on how many catalogue songs can chart?
Billboard always had those rules, sometimes even more extreme. I don't know now, but back in the 90s they would remove any song from the airplay chart that was over 20 weeks old and out of the top 20 (unless it was a slow burner still climbing).
The thing for me is that billboard can do whatever it wants, but the Spotify chart feels most like what’s actually popular in real lifeThe Hot 100's history is very bizarre. It used to not even count airplay from R&B/urban radio until the 90s.
I'd be in favor of reducing the weight of streaming on older songs. Like after 20 weeks, you don't get streaming points or it's weighted far less. At the rate things are going, half of the Hot 100 will be 50+ week charting songs. If a song is a genuine airplay/sales mainstay like "As It Was" then fine, but I do not need "Heat Waves" charting for two years.
Right, but I think the Hot 100 was traditionally meant to represent current hits (notwithstanding a RUTH or Die For You situation where the record actually gets pushed at radio years later). There wasn't as much of a problem with this with sales because listeners could only contribute to the song's points once. The thing for me is that billboard can do whatever it wants, but the Spotify chart feels most like what’s actually popular in real life
Yeah the only 70s or 80s Christmas song that’s really made an impression in the US is last Christmas. It seems like our songs are spreading to the uk recentlyIt is fascinating how much the US leans on 50s and 60s Christmas songs whereas the UK leans on 70s and 80s
