picking up from this blast-from-the-13-year-ago-past selection, who are your favourite working actresses (tv or film) these days?

i'll have to think on a list myself, but i admit i got to thinking about this because michelle williams is one who has really risen in my estimations lately.

here's a smattering off the top of my head, arbitrarily split between tv in film and obviously a lot of it is down to them starring in the stuff i have liked most over the years.

film
cate blanchett
tilda swinton
michelle williams
rachel weisz
toni collette
(kinda fallen off the radar but still)
julianne moore
kirsten dunst
kate winslet
annette benning
naomi watts (seriously, where's she gone?)

tv
julianna margulies (the good wife)
christine baranski (the good fight, the good wife)
carrie coon (fargo, the leftovers)
elisabeth moss (mad men)
claire danes (homeland)
lena heady (game of thrones)
evan rachel wood (westworld)

Was it that Diana film that KILLED HER OFF?

ugh, i forgot about that. i think she was in some tv show recently. it was rubbish.

i just remembered jennifer connelly. whatever happened to her?
is swank still acting? i don't think i've seen her in a decade.

Naomi Watts has been making apocalyptically bad choices for a while now - she's critical and box office poison! That said she's in Luce currently which has pretty good reviews. But she sure knows how to pick a stinker :disco:

anyway, Nicole Kidman is the greatest actress alive. She wipes the floor with Streep, for one, and I can't think of anyone else who has the same extraordinary ability to convey the entire spectrum of emotions, sometimes in a single scene with only a tiny shift in expression or a narrowing of the eyes. She is EVERYTHING.

as if there was ANY doubt (and yes I'm sure we have a topic for this already)

Angelina Jolie
Sandra Bullock
Julia Roberts
Nicole Kidman
Julianne Moore
Maggie Smith

Sarah Lancashire
Sheridan Smith
Suranne Jones

Jodie Comer
Joanne Froggat
Helen McCrory

my other favourites...

Helen Mirren
Reese Witherspoon
Eva Green

Eva Green is DIVINE on every level (and her refusal to do a role if she can't get her tits out is, of course, iconic) :disco:

I love Nicole but what a bizarre choice of clip to argue that she's the greatest actress alive. :D

Luce is a great movie and Naomi is pretty good in it.

She’s doing the Game of Thrones prequel next.

I saw Where’d You Go Bernadette and Cate truly elevates what could have been an iffy movie. She’s truly the greatest.

Keri Russel was excellent in The Americans.

Off the top of ny head:

Film
Nicole Kidman
Natalie Portman
Kate Winslet
Julianne Moore

Tv
Julia Louis Dreyfus
Claire Dane
Maggie Gyllenhaal

i used to love really her. what put me off her a bit lately is all the stuff she's done to her face/lips and those ridiculous boobs. fair play to her if they make her feel better, they just distract me personally.

She's the icy cold queen I wish I was in real life. And she made me cry in Moulin Rouge! which is quite the feat.

She made me cry in so many movies, especially The Hours, Moulin Rouge and Cold Mountain. :disco:

I agree with Am, the things she’s done to her face have been very distracting but in recent years I’ve got used to it.

Juliette Binoche
Nicole Kidman
Kristin Scott Thomas
Eva Green
Gillian Anderson
Tilda Swinton
Kelly MacDonald
Frances McDormand
Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Having watched Big Love recently I feel like I have to mention Grace Zabriskie. Hardly an A-list but what an actress!

I honestly don't even notice the work Kidman has done. She still looks fucking sensational to me.

My favourites are all in this thread already, just surprised nobody said Olivia Colman. I need a who are your least favourite actresses thread, let's talk about overrated bitches.

Can’t stand this overrated bitch. Poor mans’s Emma Thompson.

Olivia Colman is not only properly brilliant, but properly versatile in her brilliance...

Olivia Colman is magnificent. And sorry Suedey, but I think claiming otherwise makes one look a little foolish.

I haven’t actually watched her in any films but LOVED her in the BBC adaptation of Les Misérables and to a lesser extent Broadchurch.

You fucking tit. Take that personally.
Wow, okay. Well, thank you too.

That being said I'm really not here for this sort of thing in 2019. Maybe I should just take a break from Moopy for a while.

I offered an opinion and clearly you all disagree, that's fine. And yes I probably could have phrased it better and was probably a bit too harsh but I just don't rate her - that's all.
