Jessie Ware - What's Your Pleasure?

I'm nicking shit from Twitter when I say WHERE ARE THE SKIPS?

She's my new hobby.

Apparently this track was an influence on the album and it shows...

That's like the female parallel to George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby" which was, coincidentally, a gay club closing track favourite in London in the noughties.

I’ve played it once but in the background and it’s ALRIGHT. I’ll report back properly when I’ve had a few plays.

The final two songs are excellent, though. Remember Where You Are rips off something OBVIOUS and I can’t quite get my head around it yet...

Oddly it reminds a little of Up Up & Away and other 60s hippy pop.

Nope.

It’s either something off a Michael Kiwanuka album or some 70s gospel disco classic. I realise this is something of a wide span...

I said it somewhere above, but it really reminds me of Janelle Monae. Not anything in particular of hers.

Remember Where You Are reminded me of this.

White vinyl dispatched from Rough Trade today! I now have a signed vinyl, signed CD, regular CD, cassette and white vinyl.

Where’s the MINIDISC Jessie??

It’s holding up well on itunes. Not sure if that’s a barometer of anything any more but most new releases outside of the household names sink without trace in the second week these days. So might be an indication all the positive buzz is working

survey of one - I’ve actually had TWO straight male friends post on social media this week that they love the album, without any prompting from me :D she’s UNITING THE WORLD folks :disco:

With all the formats etc it was bound to happen. They should think about which song is likeliest to get radio play/threaten to cross over a bit. And the answer, surely, is Soul Control.

I'm listening to this album in full twice some days.

Sometimes I think the least essential song is Spotlight followed by Mirage, but they're properly great songs. Somehow everything else is just even better. I can't remember the last album where everything was so spot-on and delicious. without a creative fail or a few less-memorable hooks here and there. It's just an experience.

#29 last week sold just over 2.3k. So if she sells similarly, that's off 70% or so on the whole week. Chromatica lost 76%. Obviously they had very different starting positions, though. And I do think it likely she'll drop further.

TBH much as I adore this album it is an absolute niche gay interest record if ever I heard one. Just be thankful it exists at all.

I think Spotlight is the least great song on it as well.

A What's Your Pleasure survivor would be fucking hell from the very first round

The album came across a bit, dare I say it, samey, on first listen. Subsequent listens are revealing the gems, so far "The Kill" and "Adore You" are my tracks of choice.

Streaming this again to help our Jessie out

Should we have another sync listen? :eyes:

If we are talking album skips, Read My Lips is deffo the weal link for me. There's not quite enough SONG there for me. I get bored after a couple of minutes SORRY GAYS

I wouldn't say I get bored of it, but Read My Lips is certainly a bit less essential than the remainder of the album. I don't think it offers that much that isn't covered better elsewhere.
