Italy 2021: Måneskin - Zitti e buoni + Global Domination

The last winner to have a second uk top 40 was, I believe, Celine Dion.

Obviously a few non-winners since have managed it. Gina G, Jade Ewan.... I'm sure there's more.

Emma FUMING

In a recent interview for corriere.it Emma Marrone, representative for Italy in Eurovision 2014, declared this about the recent victory of Måneskin: "I'm not counting the prejudices suffered, I've learned not to care. Sometimes I was too far ahead and I was not understood. [...] Instead of being supported because I brought a rock song like <La mia città>, with an attitude unlike the classic Italian pop singer that focuses on the voice or femininity, I was butchered: everybody talked only about my golden shorts peeking out under the dress and my dance moves. Now that Damiano from Måneskin shows up shirtless and in high heels, that's okay: it is clear that there is sexism."She also added this in regards of the foreign juries that did not appreciate and relegated her song down in the standings: "I did not interview with homophobic and racist countries and no votes came from them."

I absolutely LOVE Emma's frenzied song and performance, but it was WORLDS APART from Måneskin's in regards to quality :D
This sadly smacks of SOUR VINO!

La mia città SHOULD have won :disco::disco::disco:

I wasn't talking about her shorts.

In fact I wasn't talking about her at all.

Måneskin > Emma (UK, 1990) > Virginia Bottomley > Emma (Italy, whenever)

If there’s going to be justice for anybody it should be Francesca.
Second place was still quite good for her and I think most of us just thought that RaspberrySwirl's song was better.

AMAZING :D

Oh Emma is a bit deluded considering La mia città was a filler track tacked onto the end of a money grabbing album special edition/re-release.

If only she’d gone in 2012 with Non è l’inferno :(

It's quite amusing that a group of mostly gays - and this group of mostly gays - is willing success on a song which would otherwise be roundly dismissed and SPAT ON by all and sundry in any other circumstances (meaning I Wanna Be Your Slave but also the other one :D)

FUNNY OLD WORLD

Yes, this could easily end in disaster if a load of artists who'd ordinarily turned up their noses at Eurovision (and for whom we'd have been GLAD OF IT!) start swarming into the contest.

That said, for now I'm seeing it as an unalloyed GOOD THING that the prospective potential prize for winning Eurovision has just been upped to 'a spotlight for any hit-ready songs besides your winner and enough of a fanbase to easily justify a continent-wide tour', compared to 'maybe getting a hit single with your winning song and maybe popping up every year in the interval / hosting the odd contest segment'.

On the other hand, this could end FABULOUSLY if seeing the success of Maneskin, countries just send loads of cool, catchy stuff that teenage girls like.

(Not you Jack and Jake)

There is somewhat of an early 2000's rock revival going on right now with Olivia Rodrigo and Machine Gun Kelly and this fits in perfectly. Also its really catchy

I Wanna Be Your Slave is a really eye-catching title that we might listen to anyway

This group of gays, myself included, is not going dismiss (ok, maybe spit on if he likes it) music by this man :D

There must be people streaming and liking the song and not even knowing it's by the Eurovision winners (I assume it made several popular playlists, which explains its success)

It wasn’t ever an official single though so I think it was only actually driven onto those playlists in the first place thanks to the success it was already having organically (or via TikTok more likely…).

It is 100% fucking TikTok. They are gaining a very loyal contingent of fans, particularly girls in their teens and early twenties.

I predicted this, the morning after their win: That they'd have a rare post Eurovision career and that they'd be popular with teen girls. They're absolute bait for teenage girls.

That said a top 10 hit, so quickly I DID NOT PREDICT!

They really are ready-made for armies of obsessive fans aren’t they.

Obviously I’m not privy to the ins and outs of TikTok but it does seem like that there’s a lot of awareness about where they came from amongst their fans, which couldn’t be said for Dadi’s song last year for example, which I have a hunch might have taken off anyway with more people unaware of the connection.

Still not playlisted by Radio 1, mind. Although I wonder if that’s more down to the amount of effing and jeffing in the lyrics.

I've said before they fit the roles of band with obvious teen appeal with astonishing ease. The lead singer is obviously a hot piece and like numerous boyband members before him, particularly One Direction, is not scared to hint at his sexuality and displays of flesh. The girl manages to be relatable and unthreatening all at once. The long haired brooding drummer... well teenage girls love a broody boy. The other one, is exactly that, a role in every teen idol group. They also have an authentic back story.

Good luck to them! Already probably the most successful post Eurovision act since... I was gonna say Celine, but Gina G had a solid lil run.
