Taliban: THE COMEBACK

The second picture is of course the Taliban in the Presidential Palace.

This thread reads like a Labour conference dinner party after watching a Ken Loach movie right now.

The airport seems to be operating some flights again, but the situation on the ground is heart-breaking.

Edit: It doesn't, the airspace is closed, and there's a Turkish Airlines aircraft on the runway probably stranded.

It's been suggested that the Taliban spent months creating deals with tribal leaders in various rural cities to walk in and take charge. Done without the US realising (astonishing intelligence failure, in a country they occupied!).

At least one minister from the outgoing government has swaped sides and has taken a new government position, suggesting it had already been agreed.

This wasn't impromptu, this took months of preparation.

There's supposed to be a peaceful transition of power. It's such a strange concept when the country has basically been internally conquered. As shocking and quick as it is, it also feels very presumed and accepted.
@Ag You've called it since yesterday, now it's confirmed.

The images and stories from this make me feel sick. I still can’t believe the Biden government have let this happen? Theres a video of the UK defence secretary choking back tears saying that not everyone will be able to get back. Shameful.

There was an awful video I saw earlier which I WON’T share showing people falling off a plane after it took off as they’d tied themselves to the wheels :(:(:(

I saw the first half of people clinging onto a plane before it took off and that was enough. Grim.

I can't remember the last time we saw such a massive scale loss of human potential and freedom and life unfold on live TV...so many millions of people just waiting to find out if they'll ever make it out of that jail. It makes the experience of living in the absolute safety of the west feel so absurd and unreal, and somehow obscene.

I'm so frustrated by this whole thing, what a massive political disaster for Biden. How can he be sitting there thinking this was a good call seeing what's happened.

I never know what to do when these scenes of massive carnage happen other than to try and not look. If I think about it too much I feel it would overwhelm me.

Macron gave a good speech, where he promised refuge to anyone who worked with French forces. We stan a responsible queen.

I really try not to be blinded by partisanship, but it seems like everything Biden is saying is correct? Or am I wrong?

I think everything that he said was broadly correct, but there was a hell of a lot of obvious stuff that he didn't say which is also fairly important.

It's still an abdication of American responsibility for the mess that was created. He may well have opposed things in the past, but it doesn't make his choices now justifiable.

His line about Americans dying in a war that Afghans are not willing to fight just sits badly with me. They didn't want the invasion in the first place. When a country interferes to that degree, it has a moral duty to then own and clean up it's mess afterwards, as best possible. Pulling troops out and letting the capital be sacked in a day, with all the danger to life that poses to the people that helped American forces, is cruel and, at least from the BBC News writeup I'm reading, he didn't address that.

One day the western allies will learn, you either don't go in or you go in for much much longer than you ever anticipate. Wars cannot be faught by simply going in and pulling out again when you get bored. I am not a big fan of interventionist military action in the first place, but you certainly can't fuck around and leave and hope everything will be okay.

Many countries have announced that they’ll be helping Afghan refugees fleeing Taliban while this ABSOLUTE RANCID CUNT announced that France will do everything to stop illegal immigration from Afghanistan :manson: So fucking ashamed
