2022 French Presidential Election

Then abolish income tax and tax wealth instead. Ensure that people and companies pay the taxes they should rather than avoid them, and maybe look at upping corporation tax as well. Sorted, you can afford to pay pensions (until you abolish them for UBI :disco:)

That might be a genial idea, but it’s not what France is really planning to do.

But at the same time, jobs are not unlimited. The more the elders are asked to work for, the less easy it becomes for young people to get into employment.
I don't think many 25 year olds are competing for the same jobs that 62 year olds hold! even in hospitality and retail older employees will by and large occupy more experienced positions, no?

Underemployment is already an issue and is growing rapidly. People staying in jobs longer is a big part of this

They don't directly compete for the same jobs, but the more the elders stay in workplace the slower their replacements will move up the ladder, the slower they move up the ladder the less opportunities for youngsters to get in.

the retirement thing being such a big deal is really weird. I guess people would be a bit bummed about working a couple of years longer, but all logical thinking says it's the right thing to do. and it will be introduced incrementally anyway.

I don't agree though with blanket statements like "France is paradise compared to..." - financially many are suffering and people will always bristle at voting for the continuity candidate when their own circumstances are difficult.

I think in the end though people will come out for Macron and he will snatch around 56-58% of the vote.
I agree that blanket statements are never good, but just compared to a lot of other places France really is a country where people are taken care of. It has one on the best social security systems in the world, a 35- hour work week, very good workers protections, paid holidays.. it’s not perfect, and yes there are loads of problems, but these are not problems that Mme Le Pen would address- in fact she would make them 1000 worse .

While we AGREE that cunt Marine will make things worse, don’t forget that all the things you listed are things Macron is actively trying to change. Workers protection, he’s reduced that considerably with the unemployment law. The 35-hour week is constantly under attack by the right. Free universities, it seems like we will be saying bye to that with Macron’s next quinquennat.

ARE YOU HAPPY NOW??? :):):)

It will be a fairly decisive win for Macron. I'm pretty sure there will never be a Le Pen or any other fascist in charge of France.

final prediction is 59-41 Macron. I trust that the disillusioned will ultimately come out to stop Le Pen.

I hate to say I told you so, but...

...in this case, I actually DON'T

I will.

TOLD YOU ALL SO.

As much as there us the horror of a fascist being second, I always suspect the drama is rather media inflated

Oh that's good news. Go Macron!

What are the French laws around running for office? Can LePen run again? WILL she?

Excellent. Of course, a worry what comes next after Macron, but there are five very long years to sort that. About as good as you could really hope for the result to go today at least! And a real success for Macron - first French president to get re-elected in twenty years.

No laws around how often you can run unless you actually get elected President - you're limited to two terms maximum. I can't see her not running again, she's only 53. The main worry is that Macron doesn't really have an obvious successor at the moment and the mainstream parties have been very weak the last few years thanks to him, but there's plenty of time for one to emerge/them to potentially recover.

How would that compare to last time they went head to head?
From 66-34 to 58-42 - so an 8 point swing to Le Pen, which would be pretty big by UK standards, but then that's in multiparty elections rather than two-candidate runoffs.

I bought a Christine & the Queens box set today containing the French and English editions of Chris so I like to think that in my own way I made this happen.
