I was never a big fan of Music when it was released, but like everything else from its parent album it has grown on me over the years.

Holiday I’d gladly never hear again.
 
Sorry was my favourite song from Confessions. It probably still is, but I grew tired of it. I like the Pet Shop Boys remix.

that and Hollywood were the first Madonna songs I actively disliked. The melody is all over the place!
 
'Sorry' is quite divisive in the fanbase. It was almost a default number 1 for her as she was coasting after 'Hung Up'. She herself is not a huge fan of it. I've always liked it - it's so carnal :disco:

We commence the countdown proper with a track from 2019’s Madame X. After a relatively underwhelming decade commercially and artistically, the album was perceived as a return to form of sorts (despite what Pitchfork says). To me it is her best album since Confessions, and while the heavy use of autotune throughout the album was a choice; in the case of “God Control”, it works. The muffled intro as though she is singing through gritted teeth then leading into some crazed disco pastiche encapsulates the Madonna/Mirwais partnership down to an art. Lyrically, it swings from the clever (the ‘gun/God’ pun) to the crazy (‘People think that I’m insane/ The only gun is in my brain’) and the frenetic pace of the music matches it. How much of that is Madonna’s own contribution has been muddled by the controversy with Casey Spooner (he had demoed an early version of the track to Mirwais) – and this may also explain why the commissioned remixes haven’t yet seen the light of day.


The video would have benefited from a serious edit but the partnership with Jonas Akerlund remain synergistic. However, the song really came to life for me when I saw it live on the Madame X Tour and I think otherwise it may not have made my top 50. The low-key emergence of her onto the stage to a backdrop of bloody stars and stripes whilst dressed as George Washington was a moment for the ages and if she ever finishes editing the tour film we may all finally be able to see it. Anyway, it’s great. Check it out if you haven’t!
 
I was so excited about God Control when it came out, I convinced myself it would be a hit. I played it for my friends in excitement, but nobody cared :(/:D
 
I only care for 2 songs from Madame X - "Medellin", and "I Don't Search I Find". The latter has some great remixes.
 
I really enjoy ‘God Control’. My favourite part is the intro with the slurred speech style and the choral vocals, it feels very her so I was a bit disappointed when I discovered she did actually write this part of the song.

I think Madame X is a fine effort on the whole, my favourites on it are Extreme Occident, Killers Who Are Partying, Crazy and Future.
 
Gawd Control was the best song on Madame X, but it doesn't stand up against the iconic moments Suedey has already thrown in the bin.
 
Anyway, as long as Devil Wouldn't Recognize You claims its rightful place at #1 of this countdown, all will be forgiven. The Imperial era was over, but our fallen Queen could still give us one last slay.
 
TBH I am here for a Hard Candy reappraisal in this countdown. Imagine if Ms. Suede busses 4 Minutes into the Top 10. I could almost cry thinking about 2008.

My mind seems to have completely erased God Control. It took me a while to remember it. It was indeed the best song about Madame X but I’m not sure it would’ve made my top 50.
 
The singles from COAD were perfect. Sorry was the most commercial thing on there after Hung Up. Jump was obviously a bop, but it is very gay. Get Together is obviously the best song, but it was too much of a sultry gem to smash.
 
And I'm wagering that American Life is that album not featured on here. "Die Another Day" is the best thing on it for me by a mile and it's already tossed aside :o
