TV Ratings 2021

Terrible figures for The Masked Dancer! Hopefully that doesn’t take away from The Masked Singers success.
The Masked Singer picked up as the series went on. I wouldn't be too surprised to see this do the same, although stretching it across the week may make a difference. Either way, I don't think it will harm Singer when it returns.

I imagine very largely due to good weather.

As much as I still enjoyed this season it didn’t feel QUITE RIGHT that it wasn’t pitch black and freezing cold outside while I was watching it. Definitely perfect Winter viewing for me.

Strangely enough I spotted Heidi Thomas (writer of Call The Miwdife) and her real life husband Stephen McGann ( Dr Turner) in the Highlands Hotel in the town where I was born and bred a couple of years ago. In the same hotel Christine Baranski was at the Hogmanay celebrations, and Meryl Streep also stayed there when she was filming locally. No one seems to bat an eyelid, and am not sure anyone even knows who they ARE.

Strange considering I couldn’t wait to leave and big celebrities all seem to be buying houses nearby.

Coronation Street down 2m on a year ago. Emmerdale down 1.5m. EastEnders down about 0.8m. Were we still in peak lockdown then?

Fantastic figures for Time. Did anyone watch it? As bleak a story as it was I found it FASCINATING.

Those are very good numbers. I watched the second and third episodes at the weekend. Excellent stuff.

At what point do they accept that Coronation Street fans do not want to see shootouts, drug dealers and gangsters. They want to see Rita having a gossip in the salon, Tim and Sally having a row over who left the seat up, Gail dancing in the kitchen and Mary having a strop over a burnt bacon bap.

I stopped watching about 6 years ago and have tried since but it’s just so awful. Even my loyal relatives are switching off. Such a shame.

Oh dear. I still dip in and out but it is very much something I have on in the background now rather than something I pay full attention to. Eastenders still gets my undivided attention though.

Yes, I think you have hit the nail on the head. The characters are not at all relatable or humorous like they once were. The best one in it these days is Tyrones gran played by Maureen Lipman but they seem to have watered her down a bit now too.

I don’t actually think we were? Did things not open again from June through to around October?

This was from the corresponding week as the last chart I posted - spanning end of May/start of June.

7.6m for an England international seems really low.

Pleased to see the Great British Sewing Bee do well. It feels like it's finally starting to fill the void left by the Bake Off going to Channel 4.

Apparently the England vs Scotland match had an average audience of 18.4m. We'll get that next week.

The three big soaps have all put their episodes on iplayer or the itv hub, haven't they? In guessing that's why they have all dipped this week.

England v Germany peaked at 20.6 million :o

I presume it’d be even more when factoring in people watching in pubs/fan zones etc

The quarter final figures are going to be HUGE with it being primetime on a Saturday.

Any news on the Love Island season premiere figures?

According to the overnights:

England Vs Germany (BBC One) - 13m (68.8%)
Sweden Vs Ukraine (BBC One) - 7.9m (41.9%)

Ukraine v England peaked at 20.9m (81.8%) making it the most watched live event of the year :o

ITV have the semi in the week though. They'll get payback...

Around 21 million is now 81.8% of all people watching terrestrial tv or tv altogether? :o

I remember the days when the soaps easily got those figures on a midweek night.

I assume it's all TV (well, excluding Netflix, Prime etc), as the website I get the chart figures from includes non terrestrial channels.

Programmes like Coronation Street still managing over 6 million (on a normal week without football) is still mega impressive, really. The likes of Strictly is phenomenal figures, although I’m sure viewership will be higher throughout the dark evenings of Autumn and Winter.

It seems very low, doesn’t it?
If 21m is about 80%, I guess that means 25m were watching TV in total. Which seems a little more than the number of people watching TV when The Great British Sewing Bee last week (audience of 5.96m, 27% audience share).

I think there is just so much competition from other media now compared to previously. In those glory days of the soaps getting 20m and episode, I imagine there were still nearly another 20m watching different channels.

Plus specifically in the case of football (and perhaps even more on a Saturday night), people will be driven towards Netflix, Prime, iPlayer etc etc as an alternative.

That’s pretty much it. The other channels aren’t even trying to compete with football, so I’m just watching Netflix/Prime shows instead.

Look at the chart I posted earlier - they aren't trying at all! It's not even like the football is getting HUGE audiences.

But Gogglebox and Corrie the only two shows getting over 5m? It's really poor.
