TV Ratings 2024

Both channels are as bad as each other for celebrity repeats. ITV also consistently used to play CATCHPHRASE repeats. Both have constant repeats of Pointless, The Chase and Tipping point in the afternoon throughout the year.

Everything is so risk-verse (or perhaps that should be cash-strapped) that there's no experimenting anymore. We still get the odd new show that is a breakout hit (The Traitors, The 1% Club), but linear television feels creatively bankrupt these days.

BGT starts again this weekend. Another show that is on its last legs. I am assuming it may still top the ratings chart but last year, and now this year I just couldn’t give a FUCK.

BGT last year, for comparison in a few weeks

Not sure if this is the correct thread or if anyone on here watches but I see Vera is ending. Not sure if it has been axed or if Brenda Blethyn wanted to pack it in? I think it still does pretty well viewing figures wise?

I've read Brenda Blethyn has chosen to leave. It's one of the few guaranteed ratings successes ITV has - I'm sure they would happily carry on with it.

I thought it was a ratings success but wasn’t sure. I actually didn’t realise Brenda Blethyn was nearly 80 so am not surprised she is stepping back, especially if the character is meant to be the same age. I haven’t really watched any of it.

I don't watch it either but I read she only stayed to do the last lot because they brought back one of her old sidekicks temporarily.

The first episode of Fallout on Prime got 3.163m, but none of the other episodes charted, so the average would be below the chart.

Lolly love, am I right in thinking Baby Reindeer would have been eligible for that week's chart, as it was released on 11 April?

If it dropped on that date, then yes. Not in the top 50 shows though, so below 2.555m.

OH. Mad that what feels like the most talked about show of the last week has... fewer viewers in the UK than 'Professor T'. Whatever the fuck that is

I won't make a habit of this because it's very much @lolly's domain, but here's the equivalent week just five years ago:

1. Line Of Duty 10.335m
2. Britain's Got Talent 10.117m
3. Coronation Street 7.227m

The Apprentice at #1 surprises me...its so tired but I am guessing won't be going anywhere soon

There's quite a few newish dramas that could easily take over the Vera slot, Van der Valk being one Grace which did huge numbers during the pandemic.

Grace has proven to be reliable and delivered numbers only slightly below Vera's last time out. And it appears to have been confirmed for series 4 and 5, with 4 coming later this year.

Van Der Valk was big (6m plus average) during the pandemic but has been dropping since, and was below 4m for its last series. From a quick look, I can't see if series 4 has been confirmed.

But regardless, they would both involve moving things across schedules and leaving gaps where they were, if they want to push them to Vera's Sunday night slot. And for a channel clearly struggling to fill that schedule, if they are starting to rely on repeats of repeats in primetime, it still must give ITV a headache.

You'd hope after the success of Mr Bates at the start of the year that they are already moving in that direction, though.

It's very much #1 because the bigger shows which held it off earlier in the run have now finished, but the #1 show is still the #1 show and seeing off all competition.

I don't think I heard a single person talk about it in real life at all this series.

ITV don't have anything else with this consistency over such a long period, do they?

I would be very confident in saying NO. Those figures are fantastic.

At a guess, I'd say Midsomer Murders might be a reasonably consistent performer? I have no doubt it's drifted downwards somewhat after 23(!) series', though.

You just made me google Midsomer Murders and see that AUNT BABE is now a regular character. :wownic:

It certainly isn't as high as Vera recently. And doesn't have the info as easily accessible as Vera did, but I may do further investigation later.

I only started watching Vera in lockdown, and was quite snooty about Mr L watching it from the beginning before. I imagined it to be a lot more kind of fluffy than it is. Not that it's particularly gritty, but it's not the Sunday evening pensioner drama I was expecting.

Are they not better off just creating a new sleuth played by Sheridan Smith or Katherine Kelly?
Possibly, but I imagine Sheridan Smith as a young Vera in a prequel (like Endeavour was to Inspector Morse) would excite them, if they consider there is value in the brand.

Joanne Froggatt AGOG.

Worth noting ITV now also has a Sunday night show called RIDLEY, which as far as I can tell is basically Vera, but where Vera is Ted Hastings from Line of Duty.

It's coming back for a second series and is also 2 hour episodes. Hard not to think it was initially commissioned in the thinking that Brenda Blethyn would want to hang up her anorak soon.

$value

Oh yes, I watched that and forgot all about it.

Just what everyone was asking for - Vera without Vera, but with an old man and added jazz.

I don't watch Vera, so I can't attest to its appeal, but I'd guess it's somewhat driven by having an older woman in a role that has been historically male-dominated (A Touch Of Frost, Inspector Morse) and Brenda Blethyn playing it very well.

I'm not sure Ridley is quite so unique in that regard. It looks - just from the promo image - to be about as typecast as possible :D

My parents enjoy watching episodes of Vera over and over again because they can never remember how they end. They do the same thing with Lewis, which I have told them not to on account of L******* F** but they don't listen.

Assuming it's from about series 11 onwards that overlaps with Vera, so it's been a pretty reliable performer across that timespan...except for the most recent series. Not sure what would've happened there...

Kevin Lygo (director at ITV) has said that Mr Bates vs The Post Office brought 5m new users to ITVX, which is astonishing.

Now thinkbox has updated, there's more info re breakdown in viewing.

For the chart above, Race Across The World was the most watched programme on 7 day catch up:

1 2.337m Race Across The World
2 2.160m Beyond Paradise
3 2.012m The Apprentice
4 1.244m The Cuckoo

No other shows (except one episode of Coronation St with 1.023m) had over a million. The highest catch up figure for an episode of EastEnders was 885k.

I guess it just goes to show how poor uptake had been beforehand.

Mr Bates vs. The Post Office definitely felt like a bit of a watershed moment for ITVX, though. I'm inclined to think the timing of it helped immensely; it felt very much like coming in the New Year lull, people perhaps had a bit more time/inclination to navigate ITVX in a way they mightn't usually.

Although it doesn't necessarily feel like ITV has capitalised on that momentum, in fairness, it has only been a few months, and I've no doubt they'll be looking for something similar to fill the same window next year. I'm interested to see whether they chuck Coronation Street and Emmerdale back onto ITVX during the sporting events this summer. And, if so, whether it'll only be temporary. As much as we talk extensively about the soaps and falling ratings, that seems like ITV's best chance of actually luring audiences to ITVX on a regular basis.

I think the scale of the success of it took them by surprise, so they probably couldn't capitalise on it immediately in terms of what was being broadcast soon after. You have to hope a lot of decisions made since then have been affected by it, though.
