Seconded on the voice being a very acquired taste (ever since her 'comeback' it's actually mostly UNLISTENABLE, even with added studio trickery) but you just can't argue with the tunes, pre-1992 at least. Most of her imperial '80s period stuff was written by the team behind melancholy synthpop meisters Hubert Kah, who are swiftly becoming one of my favourite German pop acts of all time.
Into a Secret Land really is a top-notch album start to finish, the near-title track being ever better than "Maria Magdalena" and "In the Heat of the Night" in my book!
Speaking of Teutonic trash pop, for my sins I have spent a LOT of 2012 wilfully getting addicted to other shining examples of the genre like FANCY, BAD BOYS BLUE and C.C. CATCH. The latter was a Dutch bottle blonde often joked to actually be Modern Talking's Dieter Bohlen, who wrote all the hits, in drag

Cynically marketed as a rival for Sandra, only her catalogue truly IS utter vapid discharge without any redeeming musical values whatsoever - she can't sing, can't dance and barely looks conscious in her videos (a Britney for the eighties then

). And the tunes were all Modern Talking rejects, which Bohlen even readily admits. But fuck me if I don't get a massive grin on my face every time I hear her cluelessly grunt "S-s-s-soul survivor" or arguably her finest hour, "Strangers by Night"
But lovers by night, sometimes be strangers today indeed

Most of the praise should probably go to co-producer Luis Rodriguez, who knew how to make a cracking Eurodisco stomper in the studio! Without his beats and squiggles her 'songs' would be mostly insufferable.
