Some high-drama debate over the merits of SANDRA (1 Viewer)

I don't universally dismiss Sandra! Maria Magdalene is AMAZING. Her Greatest Hits really is a slog though.

I'm not hearing the drama or camp in this song though. Just sounds like generic early 00s RnB-lite album filler to MOI.

Is it fuck. GET OUT

It's the pinnacle of TRASH TEUTONIC POP (a niche genre and an acquired taste though, I do grant you)

Sandra's Greatest Hits is AMAZING. From the sublime guitar solo in In The Heat Of The Night to the shabby synths in Heaven Can Wait, there's some amazing 80s moments. I've always been more of an 80s than a 90s person though.

I'm afraid I'm with lolly when it comes to her awful synthetic voice. That new single of hers is the stuff of NIGHTMARES.

There are a few good songs though. I like the utterly ridiculous HI! HI! HI! :D

No one is saying she's an amazing vocalist. She reminds me a bit of Patsy Kensit actually but a bit better. It was perfectly acceptable for those types of songs.
Wasnt Sandra actually technically a band that Sandra herself fronted?

Exactly! She's a PISS POOR vocalist by any normal measure but the fact she had a CRACK pop team writing her tunes for YEARS entirely makes up for that. I'm amazed VoR thinks you have to be a great singer to crank out the pop hits!

She was with Luv before going solo - the idea of her fronting a band must come from the fact that she had the same team write and produce all her stuff for YONKS (including Mr Enigma who eventually ended up her husband - hence her doing the "SADE, DIS MOI" bits on "Sadeness (Part 1)" and MUCH MORE.

Oh I like loads of shit vocalists. I just find Sandra's tone very difficult to listen to for more than a few tracks at a time.

Well you're missing out - I can't deny she's an acquired taste of course, but she's done LOADS of amazing stuff if you're into trashy Euro pop. MR Lolly (a noted Sandra LOON) clearly has far more refined tastes than his partner

I've listened to that Greatest Hits in full several times. Trust me, I've TRIED :D

And I do like it in places.

Sarah Brightman did Johnny Wanna Live far better, BTW. :D

Wasn't it Arabesque she was in before going solo? They were a late 70s/early 80s disco act who where MASSIVE in Japan.

Of course, Arabesque is who I meant. Luv were an appalling Dutch trio that I used to like when I was young. Andries reminded me of them the other day and I've been torn over whether to buy their greatest hits ever since :D

Don't do us any favours.

Your bizarre love for the amazing Sarah Brightman means you can clearly appreciate LOOPY ROPEY POP when it's served up so gloriously, but as I said earlier, I'm hardly about to waste any more time trying to convert you. Your loss!

No one can be compared to Jennifer Rush. :disco:

Can we maybe split all the Sandra talk into a thread?

I'm very disappointed in this turn of events.

STOLZ und MITGEFÜHL bitte!

I'm just more partial to noted mid-noughties German Pop BEHEMOTH Jeanette.

The duclet tones of Sandra just don't really CAPTIVATE me, I'm afraid. Sorry Chrissy. :(

When Jeanette (WHO?!?!?!) delivers an opus along the lines of Paintings In Yellow (see what she did there? no, me NEITHER), THEN we'll talk .

I'll raise you RUN WITH ME

I'm afraid there's simply too much in this thread for me to get on my HIGH HORSE about at this time of night - not least the need for CAMP (), Jennifer Rush (:zombie:) and "shabby synths" (:|) on 'Heaven Can Wait' - so you'll just have to wait until tomorrow for me to CLAMBER ABOARD DOBBIN

I'll take that photo as evidence that Pete Burns could be compared to her.

I'll KEEP SCHTUM on the subject matter of this thread, as I don't want to RILE Christian and Susan-Claire any more than they have been already.

Seconded on the voice being a very acquired taste (ever since her 'comeback' it's actually mostly UNLISTENABLE, even with added studio trickery) but you just can't argue with the tunes, pre-1992 at least. Most of her imperial '80s period stuff was written by the team behind melancholy synthpop meisters Hubert Kah, who are swiftly becoming one of my favourite German pop acts of all time. Into a Secret Land really is a top-notch album start to finish, the near-title track being ever better than "Maria Magdalena" and "In the Heat of the Night" in my book!

Speaking of Teutonic trash pop, for my sins I have spent a LOT of 2012 wilfully getting addicted to other shining examples of the genre like FANCY, BAD BOYS BLUE and C.C. CATCH. The latter was a Dutch bottle blonde often joked to actually be Modern Talking's Dieter Bohlen, who wrote all the hits, in drag :D Cynically marketed as a rival for Sandra, only her catalogue truly IS utter vapid discharge without any redeeming musical values whatsoever - she can't sing, can't dance and barely looks conscious in her videos (a Britney for the eighties then :basil: ). And the tunes were all Modern Talking rejects, which Bohlen even readily admits. But fuck me if I don't get a massive grin on my face every time I hear her cluelessly grunt "S-s-s-soul survivor" or arguably her finest hour, "Strangers by Night" :disco: But lovers by night, sometimes be strangers today indeed

Most of the praise should probably go to co-producer Luis Rodriguez, who knew how to make a cracking Eurodisco stomper in the studio! Without his beats and squiggles her 'songs' would be mostly insufferable.

Genuine LOL at that 'home recording' video! :D You have to love how she faffs about bringing coffee while husband and his cronies do ALL the heavy lifting, then needs to go into deep concentration for a singing session, only to mime (half-heartedly) to the perfectly finished studio vocal. Bit disappointed that Michael Cretu was a smoker though :( But then SHE probably was/is too given how badly her voice deteriorated with every album.

4. "One kiss on a flatbed truck, a hot rain has completed our luck" :D / :disco:

:toyah: Never even picked up on that! You have to wonder whether the lyricists were in on the joke or if it's an earnest case of German poetic language coming out wrong in translation.

Oh I SAY :disco:

I actually saw Fancy live some years ago at a woefully ill-fated HI-NRG REVIVAL NIGHT. Even then he looked SOMEWHAT DECOMPOSED

Am so with you on 'Strangers By Night'. I used to have 'Catch The Catch' on cassette. FABULOUS

The video for Fancy's "Chinese Eyes" is actually quite disturbing viewing, I dare not even embed it. Some shots make a GaGa arthouse video look like Carly Rae Jepsen!

And Bad Boys Blue's "Lady in Black" is a genuine Eurodiscoschlager ANTHEM. If they'd entered Eurovision with that, Deutschland would no doubt have had TWO winners in the eighties!

Quite bizarre there doesn't seem to be an official video for it though, even it though it was a Top 20 hit that spent about half a year on the German charts

I love Into A Secret Land too and it really is just WALL to WALL corkers.

From the title track to the heartbreaking (probably) to "Children Of England", everyone is genuinely a WINNER. "Aroyunde Moye Heart" (fire the diction coach!), "Just Like Diamonds" and "We'll Be Together" are my tracks DU CHOIX after the blistering opener (my favourite, natch).

I think it was the first album to be recorded in Michael Cretu's Ibiza studio, hence the title and (yes indeed) amazing cover. All the Enigma stuff was subsequently done there as well as the BRILLIANT first Ruth-Ann Boyle album (yes, her out of Olive) which I HEARTILY recommend to my Cretu pop loving fellow posters.

How much of the early Sandra stuff did Michael Cretu produce?

And I meant STABBY synths, not SHABBY!

She's tried to recapture her previous glory by recording her new album in the same 80s style, I haven't heard it yet, though. And she needs to LAY OFF the plastic surgery or she WILL end up looking like Jennifer Rush! :D
