Do What U Want DEAD after R Kelly Allegations

i have to say i find the way this whole thing is developing rather fascinating. didn't spotify take down r kelly? where are people streaming him? are youtube gonna take him down? will this translate to demand for physical sales? is this whole saga gonna affect people's attitude towards buying music? am i getting carried away?

i made the last one extra easy.

kinda off topic but i was quite saddened to see bowie's name mentioned in a recent piece about "sexual predators of yesteryear".

When Bowie died, a friend of mine said quite seriously to me 'why are you sad about a rapist dying?'. It's not something I've ever heard about before or since so I assume it's guff.

WHAT AN ALBUM!
WHAT A WOMAN!
WHAT ART!
WHAT POP!

"Dope" is so beautiful. It doesn't remotely fit on the album, but I could never understand a "0"...

If you think :

My heart would break without you
Might not awake without you
Been hurting low, from living high for so long

isn't anything than gorgeous, you have a STONE COLD BLACK HEART

Dope is devastatingly beautiful and raw. I really love the way she sings the "Sing with me bell bottom blue" line too.

Angel Down is in a similar vein musically but a bit more contrived - Dope is just naturally heartbreaking

Obviously a grown man sleeping with a 14 year old girl is gross but I do think context is important. As far as I'm aware there were different cultural norms at the time, and if the woman in question doesn't feel it was rape or abuse, it feels disingenuous to project that onto her experience.

Briefly, yes, but a record label which represents acts including Kendrick Lamar protested at the removal of R Kelly and (I believe) XXXtentacion, so their catalogs were restored. I think it becomes a slippery slope when streaming platforms start removing artists for bad behaviour, do you remove Bowie for the above? Do you remove Sinatra? Elvis? The Beatles?

Yeah, damned either way I think.

She could leave it up and get shamed (which was already happening)

She could take it down and say she took it down (which people will use as a “it’s about the oscars” chance to have a pop as usual)

Or she could take it down and not say anything, but she would probably still get shamed because people never check the facts anymore and they’ll just assume it’s still up, or take the quiet takedown as a guilty backdoor move.

It’s a bit of a trope but “haters gonna hate”, and plenty of people do that with Gaga because they like Glenn Close/ Mariah /Shangela etc. HO HUM

Dope is clawing, horribly trite, sentimental crap which until that point had me believing she was fully incapable of writing a decent ballad. Manicure is just shit.

It's SO ill fitting with the album around it and such a transparent attempt at a big emotional moment it actually brings me out in hives just thinking about it

and, if we must:

Don't work Jark, I'm sure looking at the Dope (buzz) single cover will make you feel much better

Serious question:

How does Moopy feel about the fact that we have a bigger thread about this than we've ever had about R Kelly's behaviour. I get that we care about Gaga and wouldn't piss on R. Kelly if he was on fire, we'd been drinking since noon and he was actually in the toilet bowl burning to death but you know what I'm getting at.

Also, why is Gaga copping the flack? Does this not risk turning into Chris Brown/Rihanna all over again?

I'm not sure there's all that much for us to say about R. Kelly's behaviour. He's a creepy scumbag whose music has always been shit and I would not expect much disagreement on that. It doesn't make for a particularly compelling thread. I would hope that any criticism of Gaga in this thread is viewed in the light that she deserves gentle mocking on an internet forum whereas he deserves to be in hell having a pineapple shoved up his arse.

That’s simple. We are not the target market for R Kelly full stop. We very much are for Gaga.

Indeed to the first point. Doubtful for the second but I take your point...

It's a good point. We might discuss the allegations more after the documentary is broadcast next month - I'm not sure we really have all the information at the moment beyond what everyone had suspected for years.

r kelly has put his name to some great music, particularly his debut 12 play but also songs he's done for everyone from aaliyah, to toni braxton, to whitney, to maxwell.
he's nowhere near mj but is one of the major figures in (90s) r&b.

i think not much has been said because his music is not really moopy and because the whole thing is very is santa real.
the problem with gaga is that she worked with him in a time when there was really no excuse to say you didn't know there was something fishy about him.

the chris brown/rihanna saga is something entirely different in my mind.

It's just that I can see the MSM trying to shift the focus, in much the same way that anyone who said a word against Harvey Weinstein was put under tremendous scrutiny and their entire lives dissected while he was in his "ranch" receiving "therapy".

Pretty much this. Where does the line go? From now on should we start deleting songs and butchering albums the moment it turns out another producer has done something vile? Maybe pop music IS evil and we shouldn't be listening to it anyway.

Hello

It took me a while to realise that "Do want U want" was a song and not some trendy young rapper that R Kelly had molested and then had subequently killed himself.

Sorry [/leaves thread]

What is that racist tag about?

It isn’t. It’s a line about the artist Koons in Gaga’s “Applause” (“Suddenly the Koons is me”) rather than nasty “coon”.

I would hope that any criticism of Gaga in this thread is viewed in the light that she deserves gentle mocking on an internet forum whereas he deserves to be in hell having a pineapple shoved up his arse.

No pineapple deserves that. Cactii are other matter...

So the R. Kelly version has been deleted but the Christina version still remains.

not only that version but all the TEN remixes (like the DJ Shadow one, Samantha Ronson one, etc) do appear on my Spotify and they include Robert's vocal
