1st: Vânia Fernandes - Senhora do mar (194pts)

Good GOD, talk about a ROUGH CONTOUR

Senhora do mar (which translates as “If VoR Doesn’t Vote For This I’m Drowning Myself” - a very common theme this round, although one the Maltese entries usually just expressed as subtext) saw Vânia keep to a firm tradition in the line of Hera Björk and Destiny of prediabetic women closing their semis, absolutely storming the semi results, and then absolutely fucking it come the final.

Nonetheless, 2nd in the semi and then 13th in the final - drowned in the wake of Charlotte Perrelli's domination/VoR voting for Charlotte Perrelli's domination - was still enough to put down Vânia (somehow 23 here, though I'd have believed you if you'd told me double) as Portugal's most successful entrant of the decade, and indeed the most successful between their all-time best results in 1996 (6th) and Salvador in 2017. Moopy sends the two tonnes of fury clumping through to the semi-finals by a 15 point margin - and HEAVEN FORFEND you should get on the wrong side of her in the meantime!

Considering I was half-convinced heading in that this wasn't going to have a Youtube upload anywhere on the website, I tell you that in my time running this contest, I have not had another moment of being left as AGOG as I was than after receiving @Ill Advised's votes and seeing this got someone's 12. A fair few of you swerved the Hungarian round this time, but even SO... (bless him, to his full credit my astonished response got a real "WHY ARE YOU BOOING? I'M RIGHT" reply of "it's the BEST ONE THERE" )

This came last in its semi with 6 points, and HEAVEN KNOWS the 2008 semis weren't renowned as a HIVE OF QUALITY

Probably Alcazar-pop in its very lowest form. Even in a contest as gayed-up as 2009's - or possibly perhaps because it was in a contest as gayed-up as 2009's - this couldn't go any further than the weeknight performance, cobbling together a mere 16 points (including, amusingly, an 8 from Azerbaijan ). Inevitably, he's now a cruise ship dancer and singer.

Oh God, this was absolute shite. To this day I only know her as 'Bus Stop Bitch' because that was literally the only memorable feature of the whole thing.

Barely sweating in its hi-NRG stroll to victory by a 93 point margin (!) over runner-up Zoli, we have this absolute TRIUMPH and - give or take a Kati Wolf - probably the best Hungarian entry of them all. If between six4one, Marija Sestic, Nico & Vlad and Sasha Son, the contest was forced to endure a run of overwhelmingly execrable openers for four years in a row from 2006 onwards, having probably one of the greatest contest openers of all time in this in 2005 was potentially enough to make up for it all.

Sadly, in a contest as percussive and quality-packed as 2005's, it wasn't quite enough to get this a booking in the top ten. However, 12th place with 97 points was still enough to mark this as one of Hungary's better finishes, and more importantly it won the REAL prize of making it to the semi-finals for Moopyvision 00s for Hungary

It's a shame Hungary didn't go down this road more often before their departure. Not least as most of their other entries were just absolutely hideous...
