The Contest Bible
The artist and songwriter Julia Alfrida became the first official contestant in the 2021 Melodifestivalen. She was offered a place in the contest through the radio contest ”P4 Nästa” (”P4 Next”). Her transboundary music is influenced by dark-pop and hip-hop, with lyrics and productions often mirroring the experiences which have formed her.

Julia's career first took off in 2019 with the single ”HER”, which won her live performances in the Pride festivals in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

The Contest Bible
The time has come for entry number one thousand since the start of Melodifestivalen in the 1950's, and the artists who have the honour to perform it are WAHL feat. SAMI.

The songwriter and artist Christopher Wahlberg, better known as one half of the duo SödraSidan (”SouthSide”), now goes solo under the name WAHL. SödraSidan have worked with artists and producers such as Hoffmaestro and Tjuvjakt.

Sami Rekik was for many years one half of Medina, one of the biggest hip-hop acts in Sweden. Now he performs solo under the name of SAMI, and he has released hits as a feature with the artists Cherrie, Danny and Jireel and others.

Now, WAHL and SAMI have come together to make their debut in Melodifestivalen, with a song celebrating the '90's.

No one in the area of Österlen in the south of Sweden is unaware of who Frida Green is. She has sung in tons of baptisms, funerals, and local events. Frida is 28 years old, has studied Aesthetics in Ystad and has performed vocals in a range of local bands – often as a backing vocalist.

Now, it's time for the audience of Melodifestivalen to discover Frida Green, as she enters the stage of Sweden's biggest TV show.

Eva Rydberg and Ewa Roos two of the most beloved actresses and artists in Sweden. Their careers are extensive in theatre, revue, film and music. They have shared the stage many times – and now, the time has come for them to enter one of the biggest musical stages in the country. But they are no real first-timers.

Eva Rydberg took part in 1977. And Ewa Roos also has some song contest experience. She won a major national talent hunt in 1963 and represented Sweden in a song contest for children in Riccione, Italy. Her song, ”I valet och kvalet”, was written for her by Owe Thörnqvist (Melodifestivalen 2017).

Now, Eva & Ewa are hoping for their big breakthrough as a duo, when taking part in the 2021 Melodifestivalen.

• Name: Ewa Maria Roos Sevenheim. Born: June 12, 1949 (age 71). Raised: Borås. Lives: Ljusterö, Stockholm archipelago.
• Melodifestivalen history, Eva Rydberg: 1977: Charlie Chaplin (7th place).
• Melodifestivalen history, Ewa Roos: Debutant.
• Other: Ewa Roos and Eva Rydberg first met when acting in a revue on the Lisebergsteatern in Gothenburg in 1969. The year before that, Ewa Roos had her definitive breakthrough with the merry schlager ”Vilken härlig dag” (”What a Lovely Day”). Ewa later went on to be the first ever guest singer when the sing-along show Allsång på Skansen started on TV in 1979. Roos and Rydberg are still collaborating recurrently. The Melodifestivalen participation will be a Rydberg family business, since the song is written by Eva's son Kalle, and the choreography is created by Eva's daughter Birgitta. Eva is the oldest female artist in the history of Melodifestivalen – but she has some ground to cover yet before overtaking the record holder Owe Thörnqvist, who was 87 years and 364 days old when taking part in the final of the 2017 Melodifestivalen.

Ari Lehtonen and Göran Sparrdal previously took part in Melodifestivalen together with ”Mina fyra årstider” (”My Four Seasons”), the Arja Saijonmaa entry of 2019.

This will not be the first time that Ewa Roos sings about ”ding dong”. In 1970, she had a hit with the song ”Ding dång jag hör bröllopsklockor” (”Ding Dong I Hear Wedding Bells”).

The Contest Bible
Patrik Jean is established as a songwriter and music producer. He won the 2020 Melodifestivalen 2020 as one of the songwriters on ”Move”, performed by The Mamas. This time, he wants to demonstrate that he is also an up and coming artist. He has already release two solo EP's.

Despite the Melodifestivalen victory, there was as we all know no Eurovision Song Contest 2020, but Patrik Jean is hoping for a new chance in Rotterdam when he steps out into the limelight.

The Contest Bible
Dotter has released plenty of music, but it was in the 2020 Melodifestivalen she had her breakthrough for the wide audience. With her song ”Bulletproof” she was one of the favourites to win the final, and she finished as the runner-up, only one point behind The Mamas. ”Bulletproof” went on to become a major hit song in radio and streaming.

Dotter has proven herself both as an artist and as a songwriter. On her track record, we can find the songs ”A Million Years” with Mariette, as well as ”Victorious” with Lina Hedlund. Her Måns Zelmerlöw duet ”Walk With Me”, which they performed as an interval act in the 2019 Second Chance show, led to a tour with Måns.

• Name: Johanna Maria Jansson.
• Born: June 10, 1987 (age 33).
• Lives: Bandhagen, Stockholm.

• Other: Johanna chose the stage name Dotter (”Daughter”) since she feels like a ”daughter of Mother Earth”, because of her strong advocacy for nature, animals and the environment. Dotter was also in elder days a Swedish female given name, which can be compare to the name ”Bror” (”Brother”), which is still occuring in Sweden. In the present day, however, only two Swedish women has the given name ”Dotter”. And one woman carries it as her stage name.

Swedish reviews of the studio versions are out, here's a compilation write-up of what the journalists are saying:

1. Anton Ewald "New Religion"
Generic but competitive Katy Perry pop, 'I kissed a Girl' comes to mind. In between Begging and Natural in composition strength but obviously made with a dance routine in mind and to suit someone with limited singing range, there should be no problems for Anton to sing this one.
Predicted: 2nd-4th

2. Julia Alfrida "Rich"
Competent but slightly too low key mid tempo power ballad. Some describes this as very Lorde-esque. A strong performer could elevate this song and make it dangerous for qualification.
Predicted: 4th-7th

3. WAHL feat. SAMI "90-talet"
This year 'Vem e Som Åss?', but will slightly weaker chorus. This is made up for with the Swedish lyrics in this one are very funny and full of local 90s references. A strong contender for DTF.
Predicted: 2nd-5th

4 . Frida Green "The Silence"
Bergendahl country power ballad and quite strong. Will let Frida's voice shine. Should be a contender on Saturday.
Predicted: 2nd-5th

5. Eva Rydberg & Ewa Roos "Rena rama ding dong"
Catchy cuplé taken straight out of a 70s children's show. WIll be strong with children but it's difficult to see other age group voting for it as it's a bit slow and might be too old fashion to qualify. On the plus side it does contain an uplifting key change, whistling and yodeling :disco:
Predicted: 4th-7th

6. Patrik Jean "Tears Run Dry"
Generic low key Paul Rey pop. Singing sounds very John Lundvik. Will need a strong performer to be a contender and the song ends with a difficult falsetto.
Predicted: 4th-7th

7. Dotter "Little Tot"
Dark uptempo Dotter with hooky chorus. Many journalists expressed disappointment on first listen but felt it was a grower on the second. Not directly comparative to Bulletproof which might similarly upset a lot of fans. Worst part of the song is the title as Dotter sings "Liddle dod". Edgier commercial pop with many interesting indie-tweaks engulfed in an aura of ascendancy.

More energetic than her last attempt and difficult to put it into a certain genre. It's got influences of Sia, electro-pop, clubhouse, RnB, lullabies and deep house. Very dynamic as both tempo and mood changes throughout the song. Refreshing that it's not an immediate derivative of any existing song/artist. Strongest ESC contender so far.

'Katy Perry pop' for Anton? The reviews I read suggested it was a dead ringer The Weeknd ripoff...
 
Well from these write ups, I want Anton, Wahl & Sami, Ewa & Eva, Dotter and Frida to qualify.

That Julia one should realise that I take 'sounds like Lorde' as a very serious, unacceptable threat and I'm happy to involve the police if it comes to it.
 
The reports that Anton's song was a bit like the Weeknd disappointed me, but the Katy Perry comparison gives me hope we might get an actual, uptempo pop song and not the usual half-arsed chart fodder the younger males are normally saddled with.

Who could've thought that "Statements" would only be the second most terrifying comparison being made in a single heat. Well done Julia :zombie:

WAHL and Dotter sound the most interesting from @VoR's write up, even though "Little Tot" makes my skin crawl. The older ladies could be something too

If Anton actually sounds like The Weeknd, it could be really good, since he's been making good pop music lately. But Anton himself sounds like a dick

No it wasn't me who spent 20 minutes the other day going through Lillasyster’s back catalogue in the hope of finding controversial lyrics, causing a Twitter storm and getting them DQ-ed and replaced with Jessica :shy:
