Some high-drama debate over the merits of SANDRA

BUMP! I managed to acquire the WHOLE Sandra discography (apart from that song about her DOG) at the weekend :eyes: and I have been slowly working my way through them from The Long Play – I’m currently up to My Favourites from 1999.

I think she gets a really BAD REP as a throwaway pop act, due to her having a paper-thin voice, there’s some real experimental and almost credible stuff there. Michael Cretu is obviously a genius. If you take each album as a whole they are fantastic, and you can really hear the progression from album to album.

I think each album has its merits – The Long Play and Mirrors are both FIRMLY 80s TEUTONIC pop, Into a Secret Land is a bit more commercial, Paintings in Yellow is quite experimental, especially in “The Journey” and Close to Seven is where the Enigma Influences come in. Even Fading Shades had some decent tracks on there – her version of Nights in White Satin is pretty good!

I’m not so sure why she was so adamant on re-recording half her back cat, not ONCE but TWICE in 1999 and 2006, though, but it’s nice to hear some of the stuff given an update. I haven’t got to any of her post 2000 output yet though, I’m a bit dubious after reading some of your comments, but I’ll press on.

It is impressive that she is still continuing to make music, it will be THIRTY years soon, I wonder if she’ll do something to celebrate the fact.

No, she'd have to more or less admit what her age is and she just wouldn't like that.

I remember Hitman & Her plugging the remix of Everlasting Love every week (I think Phil Harding remixed it for the UK) and I watched it gradually crawl up the charts, willing it to make top 40 but she stalled at #45 or something.

I've grown to like her current album.

I'm now officially declaring that the latest album is THE TITS :disco:

The brilliant 80s throwback production underpins some of her best tunes in YONKS and gives a very gracious nod to her imperial era. If you're in the mood, it genuinely hits the spot and then some. "Stay In Touch" and "Maybe Tonight" are the most glorious of the tracks but the whole thing works a treat.

And I can't recommend the deluxe edition enough, where the originals get an 80s 12" style retwiddle (i.e. extra bit at the start + the actual song + extra bit at the end) that just extends the pleasure.

Oh, and I love the fact that the second disc resequences the album. It makes for an interesting second take on it.

I recently heard good old SANDRA and C.C. Catch back to back on German radio. The late 80s really equalled a special time in German music landscape.

STRANGERS BY NIGHT BE STRANGERS TOMORROW INDEED :D

I'm dragging myself away from my new albums by ANDREA BERG AND HELENE FISCHER :disco: to say that I entirely agree with Christian, not least because of THIS, which easily matches the sterling likes of 'Just Like Diamonds' and 'I Close My Eyes'

Oh Sue, that is simply marvellous isn't it? I had a moment to the extended version on a SOGGY Wednesday evening this week and it was flaming MARVELLOUS.

And yes, "Just Like Diamonds" is unquestionably certified MAX.

*weeps bitter German tears*

:disco: Ooo I've certainly had a moment or two to this one. Including this evening, in fact. I mean honestly, that CHORD SEQUENCE :(

I'm going to Berlin next week and I've decided here and now that all that's going on my iPhone is KOENIGIN SANDRA

(And possibly a bit of HELENE)

On a CC CATCH TIP, canter in the direction of 'Cause You Are Young' (Original-Maxi-Version obv) as well. OH THAT INTRO!

Maria Magdalena vs Self Control

QoL Sandra vs QoL Laura (RIP)

Now THAT is the question

Ugh talk about Sophie's choice

Predictably I've become quite a Sandra FAN after this disastrous thread. :D

Totally over my issues with her plastic fantastic voice. I may even give the new album a SPIN :disco:

And another! Oh VoR, I knew you'd come round eventually!

Now let's get some album chat going once you've fully digested Stay In Touch... :disco: :german:

Luv were an appalling Dutch trio that I used to like when I was young. Andries reminded me of them the other day and I've been torn over whether to buy their greatest hits ever since :D

OH LOOK WHAT I'VE DISCOVERED :D :disco:

I picked up the new album over the festive season. Forgot about it until now, giving it a first spin.

So far I'm liking the songs and 80s throwback production, but even by her standards it really is a 100% VOX FREE ZONE :D

I NEVER got a chance to reply to that Russia documentary Su-Claire posted but it's just about the most hilarious thing I've seen in December 2013. Oh vv dear. :D

I saw that new album in HMV's yellow sticker sale in my local on Saturday and toyed with getting it, but the half price off meant it was still £9 and frankly NO THANKS

Just had another gander at The Complete History DVD. You know, her videos really aren't THAT cheap-looking in the grand scheme of things, they must have been among the most professionally-made for any artisté outside of the US/UK at the time (if obviously not quite Mylène Farmer standard). Well, with the obvious exception of the Greenscreen Madness that is the "Maria Magdalena" video, but at that point she wasn't even earmarked for a solo career and didn't have any kind of budget thrown at her yet.

They later tried to rectify it at last with a decadent big budget video for the god-awful 1993 'techno remix' of "Maria Magdalena". From her personal anecdotes inbetween the videos you can tell she's still BITTER as ALL HELL that version bellyflopped!

I've also grown quite fond of "Stop for a Minute". It always just used to blend in with all her other uptempo singles from the era on her GH, but there's something special about it. Even if it's no "We'll Be Together", ROCK those high notes, Sand :disco:

Shall have to watch that Russian video! I expect copious amounts of DELUSION to be displayed.

I toyed with the idea of getting that DVD, are all the anecdotes in German?

Oh that's good! I'll put it on my wishlist. I only actually own her GH album, everything else was "acquired" :shy:

I think I am in the mood to listen to one of her albums at the moment...maybe The Wheel of Time?

"On the Tray (Seven Years)" and "Sisters and Brothers" from the debut album are singles-that-got-away. The latter I've been playing quite a lot recently, it's apparently about her guilt over leaving behind her handicapped brother after finding fame and starting a life of her own.

Sisters and brothers are growing so tall
Strangers and lovers make fools of us all
:(

I've never really taken much notice of Sandra's lyrics before to be fair, because it's ALL about the production, but I shall have to relisten I think.

I NEED to investigate CC Catch though. Just watched the "Strangers By Night" video and I was MESMERIZED! :disco:

All of the 'Catch The Catch' album (#2 in Yugoslavia) is truly fabulous and features MAXI VERSIONS :disco:

See also: 'House Of Mystic Lights' and 'Heaven and Hell'. Lyrics so bizarrely thrown together and meaningless - with almost everything unrelated to the preceding line - that it's frankly an art form (I give you the vast majority of the Modern Talking oeuvre: pillows filled with frozen tears, lonely rainbows, avenues to broken dreams, etc.)

House of MYSTIC LIGHTS
Home is where the HEART IS
Calling DR HYDE
I was looking for my NAME

I still haven't got past Question 5 :( (How many different outfits does Sandra wear in the "Everlasting Love" video?)

That just drove me insane. And every time you get one wrong, it's BACK TO THE BEGINNING!
