Eurovision 2021: The Odds

It’s interesting that anyone I know who is French or French-speaking seems to think Voilà is a load of old rubbish, so I presume it’s so fancied because of some foreign “oooh it’s so French” fantasy.
Well yeah, imagine if the U.K. entry was Patsy Palmer wailing ‘ERE YOU GO, ‘ERE YOU GO, ‘ERE YOU GO’ repeatedly

As much as I love it, I can only really see France winning if Europe collectively decides they want to suddenly live their Édith Piaf fantasy, which after the MISERABLE last 18 months I'm not quite seeing. I could also see Babs DAZZLING in a Lena-esque way if faced with relatively weak competition.

But as it stands it's a VERY competitive year, and I think Europe are going to want something FUN - especially the booze-soaked televoters on Saturday night :D

You know what this means...

MA-MA-MAMA-CITA
TELL ME WHAT TO DO

:horny:

It's an exciting year for sure. I definitely could see France as a jury winner, it's just a question of whether it can have enough jury love to offset it's televote(which I think is almost guaranteed to be lower)...and that I'm not convinced of. Iceland on the other hand, have the opposite problem.

I honestly think Malta might be a cautious bet.

Yeah, that kind of feels like a running theme for French entries of late. By which I mean Mercy and Roi.

It feels a bit empty and expressionless to me, I just think they’ve had MUCH stronger songs in recent memory which have been nowhere near as favoured.

Jesus, Oddschecker has Portugal listed at 15th favourite in their odds. I know we all like a dark horse which comes from nowhere during the rehearsals, but not like this. Not like this.

The staging does look quite good, but not for one second am I buying it's now a qualifier. It's still a song contest and the vibe I'm getting is a bit Austria 2015 and well, that did not fare well.

I’ve seen Cyprus is now as low as 9/1 with some bookies :o

SO glad I put my bet on earlier! :D

BITCH, PLEASE

BITCH, PLEASE

As someone whose French amounts to "bonjour" and "Mylene Farmer" at best, I did question this myself. But of course everyone knows the word "Voila" - does that somehow make me like it more because it's familiar and, as was said, all so FRENCH-ESQUE?

Well no. I swapped the word out for things like "poisson" and "ongle" and I love it all just the same. It's a fabulous, charming number and the way it builds and builds elevates it to something both urgent and fragile at the same time. It's a bit special I feel

But of course the French language does sound more palatable than some others on offer, which helps

I note Cyprus are up to 5th favourite and Italy is the HOT FAVOURITE.

Unsurprisingly Ukraine has shot up in the odds, and Switzerland has had a boost since yesterday's rehearsals.

For some reason Destiny has moved ahead of Barbara again into second favourite; wonder what would have prompted that?

Probably just delayed semi-final effect. She had been closing in on her all day yesterday but slowly.

I think this might be a year where the bookies are way off (like most years).

I mean I can see why the gamblers on Moopy will be interested, but how accurate ARE they usually?

So one of the top three in the odds has I think won every year since about 2012? 2011 was a big miss I think in that regard (France were at LESS THAN EVENS that year, so little wonder that the French delegation were basically openly planning the 2012 contest in the last couple of days before...), and I think 2001 was as well, and definitely 1994 - so generally I'd guess the bookies flunk it about once a decade.

They usually tend to get it right, but I think this year is one they'll be off - I mean, Italy are down to 5/2 with France behind at 3/1 on Betfair, which just feels *insane* to me when Iceland are at about 16/1.

I'm sorry but this is 100% a battle between RAVEN QUEEN and ITALY.

I can't see it pan out any other way AT ALL.

I'm very much veering to this also, with a potential STRONG televote for Iceland putting a last minute spanner in the works.

All the uptempo female bangers are going to deliver a FABULOUS FINAL, but some a rather HOMOPHOBIC set of results I'm sure :D

hopefully this is their off year then.

I guess it’s inherently less predictable for the Big Five, there’s not really the indication of their popularity except “buzz”, and the odds can quickly snowball

I think San Marino will do well due to going last and the Flo Rida involvement is getting a lot of attention, it’s been on the telly loads this morning which I have on in the background while I work from home. I also think the Portuguese song will find an audience and do well too.

Considering they’re stuck between the bookies fave and FLO RIDA in the running order I highly doubt the producers have much confidence in them :D

Didn't you spend last night bemoaning how 'odd' it was that the producers had a penchant for sticking so many favourites next to each other? :basil: PICK ONE, BINCH!

No, but if putting something next to a favourite is a sign of lacking confidence in it...

I mean for god's sake - this has got to be the first time ever someone getting put in SLOT 25 (the second last slot before voting starts!) has been alleged as a sign the producers don't think it stands a chance! :D

It’s not the fact Sweden are #25, it’s whats AROUND them.
