Eurovision Song Contest 2019 performance

She's 61 in August. Just saying.

But we can’t just give really dodgy performances a pass because she’s 60. I mean age has nothing to do with it really. I don’t expect her to bust out fast choreography any more, but she’s got to get a lot more creative than this. The performance was almost completely lacking in energy, and I don’t just mean the lack of “fast dancing”. It’s about more than that.

It wasn’t *dreadful* of course, but I don’t know a single person(fan or non-fan) who thought it was good.

Well that’s it really, I still like her. But she shouldn’t be trying to keep doing things that she’s unable to do anymore. She has charisma, but it wasn’t working just standing there in a cloak taking herself seriously and fucking up the vocal.

Oh do hang around. You gonna do well round here hun.

Actually, for me the worst part was that GHASTLY Casio keyboard beat underneath most of Like A Prayer. It was in a two-way battle with her bum notes for most offensive aspect of the performance.

I didn't think it was much cop but two friends have messaged me to say how much they loved it...

How much did they pay her for this? :D

Future was alright, but it would’ve been a better opener. Then going into something a bit more lighthearted and exciting. Hung up? It’s got the ABBA theme and it’s gay as hell

The production of LAP was horrible and made the whole thing disappointing. But I actually quite liked Future as a performance. The vocals were obviously shit but I expected that.

Yeah I actually like "Future" quite a bit more now.

Medellin was just right there begging to be exposed to Europe.
Sure but I think performing it without Maluma (off plugging his own just released album) would have sucked most of the energy out of it... I do see why she thought this was the best choice given the circumstances.

Do you really think Maluma would miss the chance performing with Madonna on Eurovision and exposing himself to a huge market? I think not. Her performance was all about showcasing an album filler and backfired.

You could be right, of course; however, to answer your question, no, I don't think it's the most obvious choice for a Latin American superstar to drop everything on the day of his album's release, and four days before his the start of his world tour to fly to Israel for two days to perform a song that's not on his album, has no chance of becoming even a minor hit, on a contest that hasn't been associated with substantial commercial success in decades, and with no cross-promotional opportunities available. And of course we know Madonna wouldn't share her cheque with him. I'd be surprised if Quavo got more than a gift bag of merch (which she would have taken back after the mother comment).

Catastrophic.

Madame X will be trying to sell tickets outside the Palladium on the day of the show.

I was so rooting for her too. Awful.

LAP was too dark and gothic. It doesn't have the same impact when it's stripped of its joyousness and sentiment of elation. And yes, the vocals were flat. I have to confess that I still held my breath at the political references though. I was surprised she went there tbh. It still made me want to see the London shows

The fact the official ESC youtube channel uploaded every single performance from last night except Madonna's speaks volumes.

That's probably more of a rights issue than anything else though. Marge may not have signed over usage rights during the contract wrangles.

That's because they can't without her clearance. Her team is probably frantically 'fixing' the vocals (or splicing it with rehearsal footage) as we speak before it gets uploaded...

I thought so, because the Justin Timberlake wasn't streamed in US for that reason. But the JT performance is on their youtube channel, so I don't know.

That's kind of where I am with it. I literally gasped when LAP ended and she said "They think we don't know about their crimes". It'll go over most people's heads and of course the detractors will focus on what they always focus on (talentless old hag can't sing blah blah) but it took balls of her to go there with it and I applaud her for that.

I agree and it was quite well/subtly crafted.

Perfing a rotten version of Like A Prayer before all of that totally killed the impact though.

That's fair enough but I guess it's more to do with people's short attention spans that they decided to switch off and judge the entire thing by that. I don't disagree that the LAP arrangement was dull but this hysteria in the press and social media about her being spectacularly off-key I don't get. I honestly don't think she sounded THAT bad. I mean, Der Spiegel's headline is that her career is over. WTF! On the one hand it's good that she still manages to get such reactions out of people but on the other hand, a serious cup of sit your ass down is needed.

I don’t think her vocals were that bad (they also weren’t good either) but the performance on the whole was entirely lacklustre.

Lacklustre is fair enough, and that's the general consensus from the fans actually (on the FB groups & at MadonnaNation).

It's the mass hysteria that I find baffling but I think that's more to do with people's reactions generally to her than the performance, which after 30+ she (and most of her fans by now) is used to...

She was really off-key, multiple times. I've watched it again and the vocals are absolutely terrible.

"Like A Prayer" is not an easy song to sing given that there are lots of sustained notes which need to be hit dead on or you're in trouble.

It's a shame she decided to go the artistic route and attempt to flog the album, as a LAP/Music/Hung Up combo with spectacular choreography would have brought the mother tucking house down.

But rarely about her live performances. She’s usually a great live performer, if not vocalist. This felt like a big misstep...

Music/ Hung Up/ Medellín would have been perfect. She didn’t need Maluma REALLY- use a fucking hologram, you’ve been doing it everywhere else...
